106 Excuses That Prevent You From Ever Becoming Great
“Something is holding you back, and you can’t quite put your finger on it. So instead of moving past it and taking action, you make an excuse. You justify your reasons for staying put.

You may have one excuse; you may have several.

What follows are 106 of the most common excuses you might tell yourself.”

The Only Self-Help Post You’ll Ever Need
“So let’s cut the crap: here’s the gist of every self-help book out there.

The only thing keeping you from doing the things you want to do is…you.

I hate to borrow something from Nike but instead of talking about doing something – Just Do It. You can wait for someone else to change it or you can take responsibility for it and make a change yourself. It might not happen overnight and it might be hard, but unless you do something about it yourself, nothing will happen.”

Losing Me, Finding You, and a Near-Miss Over Honolulu
“When I see my life as overwhelming, guess what? It’s going to be overwhelming. If all I can think about is panic and holy fuck what was that noise my plane just blew an engine oh godfuckingofallhamstersdammit, how much energy do I have left to deal with the situation that needs dealing with?

Which is the problem. We spend more time on the emotions attached to our situations than we spend on the situations themselves.”

Why America Hates Anything But the Status Quo
“Easily the most visible article I’ve ever written, I was pretty stoked.  Over 600 comments, 900 Facebook likes, over 100 tweets.  Yep, I’d hit the big time….

…However much more important than the ego boost this gave me, are some of the realizations that I’ve come to after reading the hundreds of comments on the post.

Most notably:

America hates anything but the status quo.

Let’s see if I can pull a few comments to help illustrate my point (I had a really fun time with this, and please excuse the dramatic undertones of snarkyness in my replies)…”

The Saddest Thing in Life is Wasted Potential
“As I rode the subway into downtown San Francisco the other morning for a meeting I couldn’t help but notice a girl on the subway who was falling asleep standing up.  She seemed exhausted, worn, and burned out.  It made me start to ask myself some questions:

  • Is this what people really think it takes to succeed?
  • Is this how people define success?
  • In the end is this going to be a life that’s worth living?
  • How is she spending her time that it’s causing her to fall asleep standing?

Questions to Ask of the People Who Make the Rules
“What, exactly, are the rules?

Why do these rules exist?

By whose authority are these rules upheld?”
~Chris Guillebeau at The Art of Non-Conformity

Be Prolific
“You’re human. You’re not perfect. So stop trying to have the perfect idea.

Instead be prolific.

When you’re prolific, the goal isn’t to create a single perfect golden idea directly from conception. You have to create, create, and create some more in order to whittle away at the gorge of ideas you have until one finally begins to emerge as one that’s worth doing..

Don’t create perfection. Become prolific.
